SUMMARY:Fly Fishing Fundamentals 2025
DESCRIPTION:Once again Shrine Mont has teamed up with Orkney Springs Outfitters to offer an immersive introduction to Fly Fishing weekend course designed to teach students about the intricacies of fly fishing with hands on instruction that covers everything from tying flies and casting to pond and river fishing at the South River for trout. During the 3 day event\, students will start with the basics of casting\, practice on a stocked pond and then hit the river for a day of quality fishing. \nLodging and meals are included in the package.\nAbout the instructors:\n\nDavid Clark learned to tie flies at the age of 12\, selling them to the old anglers at Columbia Fish & Game in Lancaster Pennsylvania. He \nfinally learned to fly fish at the age of 15 with the help of a local fly shop owner. After several trips to New Mexico\, Colorado\, Connecticut\, Pennsylvania\, North Carolina and West Virginia over the next several decades\, David decided to immerse himself in the craft by dedicating 110 days during the 2020-2021 fly fishing season to study many of the fly-fishing destinations here in Virginia and the fly patterns they support. Armed with this knowledge – and private access water – he started Orkney Springs Outfitters for both beginners and advanced practitioners. \nRyan Ross is a combat veteran\, native to Shenandoah County and an avid outdoorsman.  His military service allowed him to travel around the country including out West\, where he honed his fishing\, guiding and teaching skills. He eventually came back to his home waters where he lives with his wife and three sons. Mr. Ross owns a local fly shop in Bryce\, VA offering local fly-fishing guide services. \nPhillip Kauffman is a Marine Veteran and the owner of Bull Mountain Guides out of Highland County Virginia. Mr. Kauffman started his guiding career in 2017 after going to the Gallatin River Guide School in Bozeman\, MT where he continues his passion as a volunteer with Warriors and Quiet Waters. Through this organization\, he and his wife – who is also an avid fly angler – help recovering Veterans by taking them fly fishing. Phillip enjoys teaching clients to fly-fish as much as he does catching fish on a fly rod. \nForest Black was born and raised in the Shenandoah Valley. He has always had a love for the outdoors\, especially when it comes to hunting and fishing. He was taught at a young age how to fly fish by his dad and has exclusively fly fished since. Forest is eager to share the love of his craft with others. When he is not fishing he can found bird hunting with his lab Tripp\, tying flies with feathers from birds he harvests\, hiking mountain trails\, or floating the rivers with his raft. \nBrian Cooper’s love affair with fishing began at four when he reeled in a 14″ Pollock off a Massachusetts dock. Hailing from western New York\, he gratefully embraced the local tradition of skipping school every April 1st for the opening day of trout season. During his teens and the heyday of the Lake Ontario salmon fishery\, Brian served as a mate on a charter boat and fly-fished its renowned tributaries. His pursuit of the trophy chinook\, giant lake-run browns\, and drag-crushing steelhead. Brian has cast his line in California\, Connecticut\, Illinois\, Wisconsin\, New York\, New Mexico\, Pennsylvania\, Virginia\, and West Virginia. He fishes extensively in Colorado’s trophy waters and the San Juan Mountains on foot\, by train\, horse\, and helicopter.  Currently calling Connecticut home\, Brian is actively involved in fishing and guiding on the Fairfield County and Farmington rivers. When the water temperatures rise\, he is an avid striper fisherman. Brian’s true passion lies in imparting his extensive knowledge of fly fishing and the art of tying flies. DESCRIPTION:Shenandoah County will be on full display in the Ballroom of the Virginia House at Shrine Mont on Saturday during Shenandoah County Heritage Day 2025\, co-hosted annually by the Shenandoah County Historical Society (SCHS) and the Shenandoah County Library Archives. \nLibrary archivist Zach Hottel said that Heritage Day is a great opportunity for researchers\, history organizations and genealogists as well as residents to gather and learn about the county’s rich and diverse history.  “We have all types of exhibitors\,” Hottel said. “We have those who are bringing what research they have with them. We have individuals who have interest in a topic and are seeking others to discuss it and then we even have people who are just starting out\, looking to learn a little bit more about the community.” \nA Walking Tour of the Historic Orkney Springs:  Two tours\, both the same\, will be offered at 11:15 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.  This walking tour will give the timeline of the development of Orkney Springs\, including the hotels\, Van Burenville\, the village of Orkney Springs\, and Shrine Mont.  Important buildings will be discussed. The tour will last 45-60 minutes.  Reservations for the tours are not needed and the tour will meet on the front porch of the Virginia House. \nSpeaker Christopher Kaznosky\, geology teacher at Central High School and JMU\, will be giving a lecture titled “Some Geology and History of Shenandoah County’s Springs”\, at 1pm in the Ladies Parlor located on the 2nd floor of the Virginia House. \nParking: Available behind the Virginia House\, follow the signs. Those with mobility issues can be dropped in front of the Virginia House. DESCRIPTION:Yoga at Shrine Mont is very notable this year.  Shrine Mont is 100 years old and everything planned this year is extra special.  The Simply Yoga Retreat marks its 9th year and each retreat held at Shrine Mont has been different and awesome because we always have wonderful people who attend.  Shrine Mont offers hiking and space for contemplative strolls\, a labyrinth\, pure mineral spring water\, and nourishing and delicious\, homestyle southern meals. DESCRIPTION:  \nAs part of Shrine Mont’s Centennial Celebration\, we will be honoring those who are in the Transfiguration Society with our first annual Transfiguration Society Dinner to celebrate their generosity in naming Shrine Mont in their estate plans. \nSpecial Guest Bruce Wallinger will tell the story of Shrine Mont’s acquisition of the Orkney Spring Hotel.  Bruce served as Shrine Mont’s attorney and worked with Wilmer Moomaw\, Bishop Robert Hall and the Shrine Mont Board on the transaction. He literally had a front row seat for the negotiations\, document drafting\, and the nail-biting final vote. \nThe Transfiguration Society was founded in 2005\, and it serves to recognize those who have included Shrine Mont in their estate plans. DESCRIPTION:Take a break from your busy life with a weekend yoga retreat in the cool beauty of the Shenandoah Valley.  Richmond area instructors Bonnijean Boggess\, Julian Desta and Donna Cushlanis will be leading a variety of all-level yoga classes in indoor and outdoor spaces in and around the historic Shrine Mont Retreat Center located in the quaint town of Orkney Springs\, Virginia.  Take a step back in time to the natural beauty and historic buildings of this hidden gem.  You will have time to explore the grounds\, history and enjoy the wonderful southern menu items offered in family -style dining or take out.  The chefs can accommodate vegan\, vegetarian and other dietary restrictions. \nCLASS DESCRIPTIONS\n* Available to everybody\n** Available to everybody with optional strength modifications\nMore classes may be added depending on number of participants.\n\n*Gentle Zen:  This gentle Yoga practice helps us draw true attention to breath. Gentle twists and elongation of the limbs and the spine will set the perfect setting for relaxation and stillness\, both mentally and physically. This first class will introduce you to yoga lingo and poses. \n**Sun Salutation:  Honor the sun as we coordinate gentle movement with pranayama (breath control) in our morning Sun Salutation practice. Lengthen and awaken your muscles with basic yogic postures with optional strength challenges designed to energize your spirit and prepare us for the coming of a new day.  \n*Soundbath: Expect to hear instruments from around the world\, including several kinds of singing bowls\, pan drum\, Native American flute\, drums\, harps\, and possibly entirely new instruments. The goal as always is a relaxing and insightful sound journey\, or perhaps\, if you need it\, a delightful rest.  \n*Slow & Strong is a class designed to slow your flow and build strength.  We link breath with movement to build heat while clearing out the mind\, vitalizing the body and embracing the soul. The class promotes improved strength\, flexibility\, balance\, and mental focus\, while also releasing tension and fostering a sense of being grounded and a feeling of well-being. The poses will help to eliminate toxins\, reset your mind and have you moving with intention.  Slow & Strong is a class designed for all abilities. \n*Yin Yoga is a class that works on the principles of time\, depth and stillness to heal on a cellular level through our connective tissue\, joints\, fascia and ligaments. In Yin the poses are held for a few minutes to help improve circulation and increase flexibility. This is a class that begs you to take the time for yourself in a caring\, constructive and loving way.  Yin yoga is known to help regulate emotions\, reduce stress and promote a sense of calm. This class is great for those who are new to yoga\, recovering from an injury\, or need to learn how to chill.   \n*Moon Salutation (Goodnight Moon) Close the day by welcoming and honoring the moon in the night sky. This calming sequence of basic postures will help us slow down and prepare our bodies for a restful night’s sleep.  \nWrap It Up Meditation – At the end of our retreat we explore stillness to find our center and reflect on our experience. \nTENTATIVE RETREAT SCHEDULE\nMeet the Instructors:\nBONNIJEAN BOGGESS has been leading yoga and other fitness classes in the Richmond area for over 20 years. She spends her days teaching middle school students with learning disabilities and leading yoga classes in Richmond and the Shenandoah Valley area.  She is AFAA group exercise\, yoga and Pilates certified and is working toward a 200 hour yoga certification. This is the fifth annual Summer Yoga in the Mountains retreat she has coordinated.  She\, her husband and 2 kitties (Morsel and Riblet) split their time between their cabin near Orkney Springs and an apartment in Richmond. \nJULIAN DESTA is a certified Sound Healing Guide\, Yoga(200YTT) & Meditation Teacher\, Reiki (Usui Reiki Ryoho)III Mastering Practitioner\, and Artist. He has been working with the Richmond VA community for over 20 years. \nDONNA CUSHLANIS was introduced to yoga over twenty-five years ago while living on Cape Cod\, Massachusetts. There she did Bikram Hot Yoga and then Prenatal Yoga while pregnant with her now 22 year old triplet boys. In 2004\, she and her family moved back to her home state of New Jersey and she took yoga classes whenever she could. In 2017\, Donna completed her 200 hour teacher training at Grow Yoga in Galloway\, NJ. She has since done numerous training and workshops in many different types of yoga. She teaches Baptiste\, Hatha\, Vinyasa\, Yin and Children’s Yoga and has participated and helped lead many 40 Days to a Personal Revolution programs. Donna works in the special education department of her local school district as the financial secretary. She enjoys spending time with her boys\, her dog and cat\, backpacking and practicing and teaching yoga.
